Windows Live Messenger is a part of the new global service called Windows Live (formerly MSN 1). Universal account credentials 2 (Windows Live ID) are used for all services that are part of Windows Live. Thus, to change Windows Live Messenger password you need to change your Windows Live ID Password.

To change your Windows Live ID Password (you will need to know your current Windows Live ID Password, but if you don't - please read on!):

  1. Visit http://login.live.com to change the password
  2. Click "Sign In" to sign in to your account
  3. After you sign in, click on "Credentials" link
  4. On the next page click "Change your password"
  5. Follow the instructions to change your password (you will need to know your current Windows Live ID Password)

You might ask: How do I change my Windows Live Messenger password if I don't remember my old one? The answer is simple:

If for some reason you end up with "I forgot my Windows Live password" situation, you can try recovering your current (old) Windows Live password using Windows Live Password Recovery tool.

Because of the fact that Windows Live Messenger password is the same password that is used for all Windows Live services (formerly MSN Passport services), this tool will try to find a password that was saved in your Windows Live Messenger (if it was saved using Remember My Password option).

However if you don't remember your old (current) Windows Live password and Windows Live Password Recovery tool does not work, you can try to reset Windows Live password. You will need to know your location information and secret answer to be able to reset your Windows Live ID password.
